Fragrance is one of the most common additions to skincare products, and one of the most common reasons skin reacts to them. But the bigger issue for sensitive skin often isn't fragrance itself, it's that most labels don't tell you what's included in that frangrace. Under current labeling rules, a single word like "fragrance" or "parfum" can legally stand in for dozens of individual compounds, without listing a single one.[4] That lack of transparency is exactly why we think label clarity, and careful formulation, matter more than a blanket fragrance-free claim.

What "fragrance" on a label actually means

In the United States, fragrance ingredients are treated as trade secrets. A brand can combine dozens of individual aromatic chemicals and list the entire blend under the single word "fragrance" or "parfum," with no responsibility to name what's inside it.[4] That means two products can both say "fragrance" on the label while containing entirely different, undisclosed ingredients, some of which may be common sensitizers and some of which may not.

For sensitive skin, this makes it genuinely difficult to identify a personal trigger. You can react to a product, avoid it, and still have no way of knowing which specific compound caused the reaction. This creates a confusing and frustrating consumer experience for those of us with sensitive skin.

Fragrance is the leading cosmetic allergen

Across decades of contact dermatitis research, fragrance consistently shows up as the single most common cause of allergic reactions to cosmetic products. In one large clinical study, fragrance ingredients were responsible for over 45% of cosmetic-related allergic contact dermatitis cases, more than any other ingredient category, including preservatives.[1],[3]

Because “fragrance” on an ingredient label can represent dozens of individual aromatic compounds bundled together, a reaction to “fragrance” often means a reaction to one or more specific compounds within that blend, not necessarily the concept of scent itself.[1]

Why sensitive skin reacts more to fragrance

Sensitive skin is defined by unpleasant sensations, stinging, burning, tingling, in response to stimuli that wouldn't normally cause discomfort.[2] Fragrance compounds are small, volatile molecules that can penetrate the skin more easily, which makes them more likely to trigger this kind of reaction in sensitive skin.

This is also why fragrance reactions aren't always immediate. Sometimes it's a subtle stinging sensation on application, or gradual dryness and reactivity that builds with repeated use, rather than an obvious allergic flare.

Natural botanicals vs. added synthetic fragrance

It's a common assumption that essential oils and natural botanical ingredients are automatically safer for sensitive skin than synthetic fragrance. The research doesn't support a blanket version of that claim. Common fragrance allergens like linalool and limonene occur naturally in more than 200 botanical oils, including lavender, citrus, and geranium, and it's actually their oxidation byproducts, formed after exposure to air, that act as the strongest sensitizers.[5] Several of the most frequently identified fragrance allergens overall, including some tree moss extracts, are naturally derived rather than synthetic.[1]

In other words, sensitizing potential comes down to the specific compound, its concentration, and the overall formula stability, not whether it started out natural or synthetic. That's the question we think actually matters: not "natural or synthetic," but "how much, why, and is it disclosed."

Our approach: function first, dosed safely, transparent ingredient lists

We don't treat fragrance as something to avoid across the board, we treat it as something to formulate responsibly. When our formula includes a botanical with a natural aroma, it's there because it's doing a specific job, supporting the skin barrier, delivering antioxidants, soothing sensitivity, not simply because it smells good. A pleasant natural scent is a byproduct of our formulation philosophy, not the key reason an ingredient is added into a formula.

Whenever a formula includes an ingredient that contributes fragrance, even though they are always natural in our products, we calculate and control its usage level according to the safe-use standards set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the body that determines maximum safe concentrations for fragrance materials based on toxicological and clinical safety research.[6] That means every fragrance component in a formula, however small, is dosed well below safe limits in order to minimize sensitization risk. A responsible formulation strategy. 

This matters most when we formulate with essential oils. An essential oil isn't a single fragrance compound, it's a complex mixture that can contain dozens of individual constituents, several of which, like linalool, limonene, geraniol, or citral, are recognized fragrance allergens in their own right.[5] So we don't just look at how much of an essential oil goes into a formula, we calculate the concentration of each individual allergenic compound it contributes, and add that up across every other ingredient in the formula that contains the same compound, keeping total allergen exposure well below IFRA safe-use limits. The same principle applies to hydrosols and botanical extracts that carry their own natural aroma.

Our Youglow elixir sleep repair oil is a great example. It's formulated with pure essential oils, including lavender, clary sage, and eucalyptus, chosen for their role in this overnight oil serum, not just because they're pleasant and relaxing. Because those oils naturally contain fragrance constituents, the label discloses them individually: limonene, linalool, myrcene, geraniol, terpinolene, linalyl acetate, and coumarin are all listed by name as compounds naturally occurring in the essential oils used, rather than disappearing into a generic "fragrance" listing.
